Soft anime eye coloring tutorial by longestdistance Soft anime eye coloring tutorial by longestdistance
I've wanted to make an eye tutorial for a very very long time now... ;-; I hope it's easy enough to follow!!
Remember that every step is a new layer!!

It helps if the edges of the eyes are slightly blurred. (sorry I completely forgot about putting that in the tutorial xD;;)

I uploaded the file if you would like to color the lineart for practice! Everything is pre-filled in so you can start shading right away!
PSD / SAI

Any questions, ask away :iconmoesmileplz:

I have a question.. what size of pen you ink the lineart? And at the first the color of lineart is black, at the end it's brown.... what option you used to convert lineart from black to brown? Thank you! Please if you can reply in my profile, so that I remember (if pass a lot of time I will not remember to checking out the replies!) Thanks a lot m(_ _)m

Very nice tutorial! ; v ;
I kind of don't understand the hair opacity part. You have to make a new layer for that, right? Then where does that new layer go to and does it need clipping layer? ( Sorry if it's an obvious question. ; o ; )

Oh gosh sorry for the late reply
Yep! New layer. It should be on top of all the other eye layers.  Just treat it as any other layer for the eye shading ^^
I hope that makes sense :3

    I have a question...!
    Sorry if this is written somewhere obvious and I'm being totally blind,
    but what tool did you use to make the soft-looking flat color in step 1? I think I tried doing it with the watercolor tool but it didn't turn out very well! u.u;

Any time I want to fill a layer with one color I use the airbrush tool (I modified it so it's completely hard and like 300 px) and then just cover over it xD (see this pic: [link])
I hope that makes sense! If it doesn't, then let me know c:

Ok stupid question in the last hair bit. As much as i understand you filled in the solid color for hair. Wouldn't lowering the opacity make the hair lighter? (and blend with the background?) Unless you finished the coloring of hair, then decided to fill in the hair bit again, while the eyes are on top of the hair and then add opacity. But that will mean the shadowing will be less visible. D8 I am confused @_@

I'm sorry!! I did not give that last step a lot of thought, as a result, it's really vague and hard to follow xD;

Basically you're filling in color on top of the eyes. It goes with all the other layers in the outer eye folder. The eyes are at the very top. Above the main lineart, above the hair lineart, above all the other coloring.

Does that make sense? Let me know if it doesn't c:

But here I did all the handwriting in Photoshop using the stroke layer effect ^^

You select the letters, click the "Selection" menu, then click "Increment (1)" until there's enough of a selection for you to be happy, create a layer underneath it and colour in the new selected spot
u v u hope that helps~
