Weekly Artist Feature: longestdistance

Each week, we interview a different artist and share their art and featured answers on our official Facebook page. This week's featured artist is @longestdistance! When did you start making art? Did you have any training? Although my artistic interest started in early childhood, I consider the official start of my journey to be joining DeviantART in 2005. I had never posted my art anywhere before then, and joining the community gave me incentive to start improving my art and building a portfolio. For the most part I am self-taught although later on I took many studio art courses in university. When you start something, do you have a plan or play it by ear? As a younger artist I struggled a lot with the execution process and would rush into new artworks without much of a plan. I would go through a thousand steps before finally deciding on something and it was very frustrating because I rarely knew what to do next and being a perfectionist, I could hardly commit to my decisions.

Feature: Shading, Color Theory, and More

This curated feature is brought to you by @BeckyKidus, who posts monthly features like this one to their Profile. It’s September, and people who watch me know I’m in the middle of a series showcasing tutorials and undiscovered artwork. The first part of this feature includes tutorials related to shading and color theory, and the second part is a selection of artwork I’ve discovered recently with fewer than 50 favourites. If you’d like to see more features like this, previous features I’ve put together are linked at the bottom of this journal. I hope you're able to make use of these great tutorials and enjoy beautiful art you may not have seen! Tutorials: Shading and Color Theory Shading and color theory are important in all kinds of artwork and are considered fundamentals for a reason—and, like most fundamentals, they can be quite tricky. However, there are a lot of tutorials, tips, and tricks which can make things a bit easier. Shading We'll start with shading. @ARVEN92 has two
